Something Old, Something New...

For Christmas every year, since I am a professional videographer, my family has grown accustomed to recieving Video Gifts from me for Christmas. This year was no different for my brother Joe and his wife (of 11 years!) Julie!

A few years ago, Julie had given me her old VHS tapes of her wedding video (shot in 1998) to transfer...and I never did! So I thought, how about making them a "Special Edition DVD" of their wedding????

Not only did I transfer their 90 minutes of footage, along with 2 hours of their Honeymoon, I edited together a special "new" segment for them and included it on the DVD as well. This new segment is set to the song they danced to at their wedding, and contains much more than their wedding footage. Take a look!!!!
People never think of the possibilities or the power of video, but I do! This kind of a video is so simple to put together, not that it is easy to edit, but it is so easy to organize this for any family! You can not only transfer (and preserve) your old wedding video (VHS or 8mm), but you can create something new out of something old.
Joe and Julie cried when they watched it, and now have something special to remind them of everything they've been through. If you are looking for a great gift idea for someone that you know, get a hold of me to get started!!!

Funny Well Wish

Here is a clip of what I thought was a pretty humorous "Well Wish" (an option where I go around to the guests at a wedding and get them to say comments on camera to the Bride & Groom.)

I am now the Detroit Movie Examiner!!!

Wow, has Examiner.com impacted my life! As you may know, I have been writing a helpful column on-line for Examiner.com since July, and I am called the "Detroit Wedding Examiner." I was hired to write 3-4 informative articles per week. Since June, I now have over 75 subscribers to my Wedding column, and the feedback from brides has been great. If you haven't checked it out yet, please do! You can read them whenever you want, or if you want email alerts when new articles are posted, you can subscribe for free, by just clicking the "Subscribe" button above any article. They won't spam you or collect any other information, so there's nothing to lose!

SOOO, anyone who knows me knows that my main passion in life is movies, and particularly going to the movie theatre. Recently, I noticed that the title of "Detroit Movie Examiner" opened up, and I applied...Well, as fate would have it, I was hired again! So I am now the Detroit Movie Examiner, as well as the Detroit Wedding Examiner!

Just like the Wedding column, I thank all my readers who helped get it off the ground and who support it til this day. I couldn't do it without you, and it feels good to help people out with their weddings.

As for the Movie Examiner column, it too will be written about 2-4 times per week. Every Tuesday, I will post about New DVD Releases coming out, and may spotlight a specific one. Every Friday, I will list a movie guide of all new movies coming into theatres. About once per week, I will post a Movie Review of a new movie, and sometimes even a classic. And last but not least, I plan on covering a lot of the movie scene here in Detroit, as there has been much talk about the tax incentives and growing a film industry in our area.

So please check it out, and click on the article! It really helps me out, and it is free to you. Thanks again and happy Examining!!!

Kristan's Wedding!!!

What can I say about Kristan??? I know her personally and have worked with her for many, many years in the wedding industry. We have been friends, sworn enemies, arch rivals, drinking buddies, and major gossipers over the past several years....Here's a clip from her wedding!

Kristan works at Cherry Creek, one of my all-time favorite wedding locations. I have been there more than any other venue, hands down. I was happy to be Kristan's videographer, and gave her a special deal, more out of fear that she would destroy me and break my limbs if I didn't!!! But her and Andy make a great couple and I was glad I could be a part of it.

Here is another excerpt, which is just a 2 minute clip of her Ceremony, for those who want to see what an outdoor wedding at Cherry Creek would look like.

Kristan now proudly displays her Wedding DVD in her office at Cherry Creek, and shows it to everybody who comes in!

Happy Halloween Everybody!

Check out this clip I found on Youtube, a Halloween-themed wedding:

Enjoy! Click Here to see the clip!

P.S. I did NOT shoot or edit this clip, just found it interesting!

My Nephew is "The Greatest!"

I heard the song "The Greatest" by Kenny Rogers on the radio today, and it reminded me of a video I did for my family a few years back. It stars future baseball hall-of-famer Giovanni (my nephew!) age 5. (Although I think he was 3 at the time of this video?)

Anyways enjoy this!

Doug & Elizabeth's Wedding 9/5/09

Doug & Elizabeth had a beautiful Wedding up in Petoskey, MI, at the Walloon Lake Country Club. The incredible water (it's like aqua-blue!) and the perfect day, was the backdrop for their celebration.

Even though I had other Complete Video Videographers do the shooting (I was already booked at another wedding :(), I really enjoyed communicating with Elizabeth and editing their video. We met through WEVA.com (Wedding & Event Videographers Association) where she put an inquiry in for a videographer willing to go to Petoskey for her wedding. It's about 5 hours from where I am (Macomb, MI) but I'm very glad that she chose us as her videographer!

Enjoy the clip!

Mena & Nermine's Wedding 8/1/09

Nermine & Mena were referred to me through my good friend Kristan, who is the Event Manager/Coordinator at Cherry Creek Golf Club. They had a SPECTACULAR wedding at Cherry Creek, (there Ceremony took place at St. Marks Coptic Orthodox Church in Troy, MI.)

This clip is from their Cocktail Hour at Cherry Creek. I had a blast at the wedding, Mena & Nermine made me feel like part of the family! Here are a few more clips from their Wedding Day:

WEVA Expo Finished!

I got back from WEVA Expo last Friday, and it was awesome again this year! The things that I learned, the people that I met, and the ideas that I generated in the past week are truly inspiring! The Expo always seems to rejuvenate me, and fills me with a sense of energy that carries thru the Fall.

The newest trends and topics at WEVA Expo, I plan on covering over the course of the next few weeks in my Detroit Wedding Examiner Articles....Be sure to check them out.

WEVA Expo: Day 1 & 2

Day 1 (Monday) of the WEVA Expo started off with an Awards Banquet, where this year's WEVA Creative Excellence Awards were given out to the best in the business...Categories such as Bridal Elegance Videos, Short-Form Ceremony, Post-Ceremony Coverage, Photo Montage Production, and Concept Videos were pretty incredible.

Day 2 was packed from morning to night with seminars, most of the ones I attended were marketing based...Seeing that I am a fairly new company (although I've been doing wedding videos for 9 years!) I am always looking for new ways to reach brides, and to stay on top of the latest technologies.

Most interestingly though, was AFTER the seminars ended last night (Tuesday). As I went to the Lobby Lounge of my hotel, I ordered dinner and a drink, and although I am 30 I still must have my boyish good-looks (ha!) since the waitress asked for my ID. Now, I could have sat anywhere in the huge bar area, or went to any of the 4 restaurants in my hotel, but I happened to sit in Erika's section. Erika, as it turns out (as she noticed my Michigan License) just happens to be from Michigan, and as again fate would have it....is engaged to be married next August!!!! She had no idea the hotel was host to a Wedding Video Convention, and our random encounter led to an exchange of information, as I hope to be her wedding videographer next year!

Oddly enough, she is having her Reception at Lovett Hall, which I JUST shot at 2 weeks ago, as well as JUST edited a video I had shot there in July. Such randomness I think is cool, and I definitely believe in fate when it comes to strange coincidences!

So overall the Expo has been exciting, but how funny to have come all this way to actually meet a local Michigan bride!

From Orlando,

Tom

I'm at the WEVA Expo in Orlando!

For the 8th year in a row, I am attending the WEVA Expo! (WEVA stands for "Wedding & Event Videographers Association", and have been holding International Conventions for 19 years now.) This year it is at the brand-new Orlando Hilton Hotel, which just opened 2 weeks ago! The Expo is Monday thru Thursday.

What does this mean to you? Well, present at this Expo is the biggest mix of Wedding Video Professionals, industry-leading innovators, and some of the biggest names in Video (such as Panasonic, Adobe, and Canon). There is an Expo, which is basically a huge trade show, with booths set up from multiple companies selling and showing off their latest products and equipment.

There is also 3 days packed full of seminars and training sessions, from marketing to production, covering a wide range of topics relevent to our industry. An Award-Ceremony kicks it off Monday night, where the WEVA Creative Excellence Awards are given out to ground-breaking, unbelievable wedding videographers across the nation.

Every year, the Expo fills me with excitement, energy, and most importantly, awesome ideas that I bring back to Detroit and incorporate in my business, and in turn, incorporate into your wedding video! It keeps me current, I know the latest trends and the biggest hurdles facing the industry. All in all, it helps to separate me from the pack of the "same old" videographers that are all over the place in our area!

Keep posted to the blog as I will give updates throughout the week!

Palace Bridal Show a Success!!!

I had a BLAST out at the Bridal Show on Sunday...If I saw you out there, thank you for stopping by and it was great to meet you!!!

This was the first Bridal Show that I've done for Complete Video Solutions, and I'm glad I did. It was a great chance to network with a bunch of awesome vendors (two of which I was next to: Breathe Yoga and Vision Photography, both incredibly friendly and awesome to have met!) And it was also incredible to meet and talk with all of the Brides at the show. Our booth was in a great location right next to the Runway of the Fashion Show, and I don't think I ever sat down the entire 5 hours!!!

A HUGE, tremendous thank you to Kevin & Laura Grammens, a couple that had me as their Videographer 5 years ago...I didn't know them prior to their wedding, but since then they have become close, dear friends of mine...They both showed up and helped me with the show, and I can't thank them enough!!!! Laura was so energetic, it was great to watch her interact with brides who were "on the fence" about having a video...and Kevin not only helped me with the booth, and walked around the show taking notes and jotting down ideas: he was also spotted helping many couples carry bags, and strollers down the Palace steps....2 stand-up individuals whom I am honored to call my friends!

So if you were at the show, I hope you had a great time and got a ton of info!!! You will probably get bombarded with emails and phone calls from the numerous vendors you saw there....including me!!! I try not to be a pest, so let me know your interest level, and I'd be happy to give you more information or remove you from the list! I hope you got a chance to watch some of the videos I had playing, and I look forward to talking to you more specifically about your wedding!

Take care and again thank you for your support!!!!

I'm the Detroit Wedding Examiner!!!

I have just joined on as a columnist for a popular website (Examiner.com). My title is the "Detroit Wedding Examiner" and I am pretty excited about it!!

The Examiner.com is a very cool website, if you haven't experienced it you should check it out, just click the link. It is localized, meaning that there are Examiners in your area no matter where you live. It covers all ranges, from Arts & Entertainment, Politics, Sports, Home & Living (where you will find the Wedding Examiners!), and a variety of other topics.

I will be writing 3-4 articles per week for the website, all dealing with wedding-related topics, and specifically weddings in the Detroit area. My first article has just posted and has been well received, read it by clicking here! If you like what you see, you can subscribe to my future articles. Future topics will spotlight local venues and vendors, provide advice, tips & tricks to help in your planning, as well as practical advice about how to translate your relationship into a successful and long-lasting marriage. Mixed in along the way, will be some history behind some of the oldest of wedding traditions, from the aisle walk, to the vows, to the meaning and purpose of the Unity Candle. I am very excited to be able to provide my experience in this field to a great number of Brides looking for some local pointers!!!

Hope to see you on there, if you have any good ideas for future articles, are a vendor that would like to be featured, or have some questions that you would like to see addressed, please contact me right away!!!! info@cvideosolutions.com

Take care!

Wanna be Friends???

Look forward to meeting you!

And look for the Complete Video Solutions Facebook page coming soon....

Clips Now Online!!!

Although I am still actively getting the website up and running, there are now clips viewable in the Weddings and Sports segments of the website. Check it out at cvideosolutions.com!!!

Some More History!

Well Complete Video Solutions is off and running! After spending the past 7 years as part of JD Entertainment, I wanted to thank the owner John DeVergilio for his commitment to me and for giving me an opportunity to grow in this industry. John is the best DJ that I have ever worked with, and I strongly recommend him if you are ever in the market for a DJ!! And here's a free plug for John as well: He DJ's up at Roger's Roost every Wednesday night, go and check him out!!!

As time goes along, people's paths intertwine, and intersect. I am happy for the years spent with JD and wish them nothing but the best! Although Complete Video is a new venture, I bring with it years of experience not only with JD Entertainment, but my years at Clinton Township Television, CMU Public Broadcasting, and the host of other video projects that I have been involved with through the years.

I bring this up to all of you reading this to explain: a lot of the clips you will see on the website and on this blog, initially, were done for other companies while I worked there. But rest assured, everything you see, I was 100% involved in its creation.

Let me know if I can help you in any way. Video is a powerful tool, and I plan on getting the word out to as many people as possible!!!

So it Begins...

Welcome to the Complete Video Solutions Blog!!!

I'm excited to begin this new chapter in my life, and I'll start off with a little background on me and my company, Complete Video Solutions.

I'm that rare type of person: I knew EXACTLY what I wanted to be when I was still a small child. Fascinated with movies, TV, theatre, you-name-it, I never even though of another career path other than Video/Film Production. It would have been GREAT to be in front of the camera, but my passion came in asking "how": How do they make that? How do you produce that? How come I'm not in Hollywood right now working in this field!!!

My grandpa always said: "It doesn't matter what you are, a plumber, a garbage man, etc. What matters is that you're THE BEST at what you do." His words led me to follow opportunity after opportunity, and although I never made it to Hollywood I did end up graduating from Central Michigan with a degree in Broadcasting & Cinematic Arts.

I was heavily involved in my fraternity (Beta Theta Pi) and also in the extra-cirricular Broadcasting groups up at CMU. I produced a show that aired on the campus channel, and worked for PBS in Mt. Pleasant. Upon graduating in 2001, I was immediately hired as a producer for Clinton Township Cable TV as a Program Specialist, having interviewed the station's Supervisor for my Thesis.

I LOVED that job, as it gave me opportunities to produce all kinds of different video, from live studio productions, to creative shorts, to PSAs, to feature-length documentaries (my documentary "Golden Mettle" produced with Charles Dewandeler, won several national awards and was the most successful show in the station's history.) It also gave me insight on how to run and operate a station, and introduced me to many amazing people.

One of which was Ann Johnson, who at the age of 93 was in poor health upon me meeting her. I was producing a Historic Documentary piece on the history of Quinn Road in Clinton Twp, a primarily black area that had been ravaged over the years, and Ann was the town historian. This woman had collected and stored a MASSIVE amount of historical documents and artifacts of the area, from old photos, newspaper clippings, church minutes, etc. In fact, 2 rooms of her 3 bedroom house were stacked TO THE CEILING with such things. Amazing as it was, this was a lost history of an area that was mostly overlooked, and she lived her entire life dedicated to preserving its memory.

Why do I mention Ann Johnson? Because meeting her changed my life and really gave me a purpose for why I am in the field of video.

Upon finishing the Quinn Road History show, I showed it to her at her home. I was nervous, and watched her watching the show, hoping she would think that the show did Quinn Road justice, and included all of the important details. When the video ended, she rose from her chair, walked over to me, and gave me the biggest, hardest, most hearfelt hug I had ever gotten. She then grabbed my face in her hands, and as she cried she gave me THE BEST compliment I have ever or will ever receive. She said, "Tom, I have lived a long time and I've watched so many people come and go through this world. So much forgotten. Why am I keeping all these things? Why am I spending my life collecting scraps? Why am I still on this earth? Well now I know...I was waiting for you. Making this video, that is why God has kept me on this earth."

I was floored!!! Pretty dramatic I know, but this woman spent her whole life trying to preserve a day and age long forgotten. But a video? It will last FOREVER. Her children, and grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will watch this video. They will be able to hear their Great-Grandma talk about the old days, about the origins of where they came from and who they are. It was after this that I realized: VIDEO IS POWERFUL.

The amazing feeling I got from Ann Johnson is the driving force behind what I do. Since then, I went on to work for JD Entertainment providing Wedding Videos to hundreds of Brides. And not just "videos" but POWERFUL Videos, that are capturing not only an event, but a time in these peoples lives, an age that they will soon outgrow. I am providing in essence, a time capsule. Something that will live forever.

So now, its 2009, and I am entering a new phase in my own "story." Complete Video Solutions is just that. Because nothing that happens in life is complete unless it is remembered. And there is nothing more powerful than to remember your life as it happened, with sight and sound. Weddings, anniversaries, birth announcements, birthdays, memorials, even deaths. My mission is simple: to COMPLETE your story, and to ensure that future generations remember what came before.

There are very few things that become MORE valuable as time goes along.

I'm a grown up now, and I still know EXACTLY what I want to do.
